D-Backs Girls Play Ball

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Insight developed the D-backs Girls Play Ball Program to provide girls and young women an opportunity to get involved in baseball! The program is free for all participants. Registration includes complimentary t-shirt, instruction and a beginner baseball glove courtesy of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Insight.

Studies have shown that girls who play sports have the ability to concentrate much better, have a higher self-esteem, make healthier decisions and have reduced anxiety and depression. Girls who are involved in team sports are significantly more likely to graduate from high school and college. By the age of 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. Based on research, girls need sports.

A combination of learning baseball skills, with team-building exercises and healthy activities, will empower girls with the confidence, self-esteem and leadership capacity they need to succeed in the classroom and on the playing field. Topics to be discussed - anti-bullying, body image, body changes, decision making, healthy active lifestyles, stereotypes, media, personal hygiene, self-esteem, peer pressure and female empowerment.

Eligibility: Girls in 4th through 9th grade are eligible to participate in the Girls Play Ball Program. The D-backs will host the Girls Play Ball Program at Chase Field for up to 200 girls.

Part one - Baseball Clinic. A baseball skills clinic will be taught by positive female coaches to develop a connection to the sport. During the clinic, a leadership panel will be held with women who work in baseball locally. Clinics tentatively will be held in May and July, with potentially more in the future.

Part two - STEM camp. A STEM camp to translate the love of baseball into an appreciation, understanding and passion of the science and mathematics underlying the sport. STEM camp will take place tentatively in August.

Part three - Girls will be recognized on-field before a D-backs game this August and each participant will participate in an on-field parade around the warning track! All participants will receive game tickets.

The application is due by April 12, 2019.

As a part of the program, participants will receive a baseball hat, glove, a t-shirt, a participation award or certificate, an invitation to the celebration and an opportunity to win prizes.
